Upcoming Snow White Films
One word: Ehhh. First off, I need to complain: WHAT THE DEUCE MAN! I’M writing (been working on it for a LONG time now) a Snow White story with a fantasy angle (and I’ve had a couple people review my work and it is definitely new and fresh) and what does Hollywood do? They try launching off THREE Snow White films. FUCK. Bad timing on my part. Sigh.
Film One: Brothers Grimm Snow White. Julia Roberts is cast as the Evil Queen; Lily Collins is Snow White; and Armie Hammer is Prince Charming. So far… I can see this happening. Julia Roberts is a beautiful woman (aging) but still beautiful. Lily Collins is young, fresh, and perky. Armie Hammer is a stud. So this has the makings of your classic fairytale – except if it is a Brothers Grimm angle, it can’t be as kid friendly as everyone thinks right? Either way, it will probably go along the lines of the classic storyline.
Film Two: Snow White and the Huntsman. Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen; Kristen Stewart as Snow White; and as of right this moment, Chris Hemsworth has just been offered the role of the Huntsman. Charlize as the Queen is brilliant. One of the most beautiful women I’ve seen onscreen. Perfect. Kristen as Snow White? Ehhhhhhh NO. I don’t see her beauty overshadowing Charlize’s anytime soon (or ever) and her dour expression is not one I expect of Ms Snow White. I understand it is supposed to be a darker film and SW needs to be a bit of a badass but yet again – NO. Chris as the Huntsman is a viable option – he is tough and gritty. But since Hugh Jackman and Viggo Mortensen both vetoed this… I dunno guys. I about shrieked and banged my computer when I found out KS had been cast.
Film Three: Snow White and Seven. Still in development. THIS film is the one I have the most interest in actually. Instead of Seven Dwarfs, they’re supposed to be Shaolin monks! Way cool right? (hahaha) This film has had trouble getting backing or being sold to a certain studio I think, not sure of the particulars but I guess it is because it is a bit far out for the American audience to grasp. I grew up with wuxia films and the thought of seven Shaolin monks kicking ass onscreen gets me giddy. Undoubtedly, Snow White is going to be Caucasian but anyone else think this is the perfect opportunity to cast an unknown Asian female? NOT THAT HOLLYWOOD WILL. C’mon… see what they’re doing to Akira? Tsk tsk…
In summary… this is oversaturation of the market. Maybe I’ll see film one, probably glance at the trailer for film two, and who knows when film three is being made. So the moral of the story is: BUY MY BOOK WHEN IT GETS PUBLISHED!! (I sure do hope it gets picked up
)
